Maine’s Acadia National Park Tour

Waves crashing on rocky shores, lobster boats bobbing in the harbor and spectacular views of bays and inlets dotted with islands are just a few of the many sights you'll enjoy on our Maine: Acadia National Park Tour. Add scenic cycling on coastal roads and wonderfully car-free trails and you'll understand why they call Maine "Vacationland". You'll also have plenty of time to relax at the area's finest accommodations and enjoy delicious meals featuring fresh, local fare.

Itinerary

Day 1: A Taste of Acadia (Biking: 11 miles, Hiking: 2.5 miles) We'll meet in Bangor and shuttle you one hour to the charming seaside village of Bar Harbor, where your guides will fit you to your rental bike and get you oriented and ready for you first ride. We'll head out for a short spin on Acadia's famed Carriage Road trail system before stopping at the visitor center to enjoy a short orientation video for the park. After lunch we'll hike up Acadia Mountain enjoying panoramic views of Somes Sound. Tonight we'll enjoy dinner at one of Bar Harbor's best restaurants, where you'll have the chance to sample the freshest seafood! Meals included: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2: Biking Acadia Carriage Roads‍ (26 miles) Following breakfast, we'll pedal our way back to Acadia to explore more of the Carriage Roads. A gift of philanthropist, John D. Rockefeller Jr., the 45 miles of rustic carriage roads weave around the mountains and valleys of Acadia, providing car-free trails on which to explore the heart of Mount Desert Island. We'll stop for lunch at the Jordan Pond house where you'll have the chance to try one of their famous popovers. In the afternoon, you have the option to hike to Bar Island, a unique trail that is only accessible during low tide. Tonight we will dine together at one of the many great restaurants in the area. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3: Kayaking the Western Side of Acadia (5 miles) Today we'll enjoy a serene and scenic paddle on the less traveled western side of Mount Desert Island. Where we'll paddle depends on the weather conditions. We could do an out-and-back or a one-way point-to-point paddle, but the goal is to have the wind at our backs for a more enjoyable trip. The Westside has less development and less boat traffic which translates to better wildlife sightings. After our paddle we'll head back to Bar Harbor where you'll have some free time. This evening another delicious dinner awaits. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: Bar Harbor to Southwest Harbor (25 or 53 miles) Today's ride follows the coastline of Mt Desert Island, dipping in and out around small inlets and the fjord-like Somes Sound. We'll pass through several small harbor towns and fishing villages offering the chance to explore boutique shops, art galleries and eateries. You may like to wander the meandering paths through the Asticou Azalea Garden or enjoy a lobster roll or steaming bowl of "chowdah" in Southwest Harbor before arriving at the much photographed Bass Harbor Light. From here you may cycle or shuttle back to Bar Harbor where dinner is on your own tonight. Meals included: Breakfast & Lunch

Day 5: Cadillac Mountain & Park Loop Road (21 miles) You'll begin the final day with the option to enjoy sunrise at the top of Cadillac Mountain, at 1,532-feet it's the highest point along the Atlantic coast and known for being the first place to see the sunrise in the United States. The spectacular display of pink and orange hues reflecting off the island-speckled bay is well worth the early morning trek. We will then set out on the scenic Park Loop Road which offers stunning vistas overlooking Frenchman's Bay and access to many famous Acadia sites along the way. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 6: Depart for Bangor After breakfast we shuttle you back to Bangor‍‍. Meals included: Breakfast

Washington’s San Juan Islands Bike Tour

Visit Washington State's San Juan Islands, riding some of the quietest and scenic terrain available in this spectacular state. Slow down and take it all in - a temperate climate, tranquil waters, mountain vistas, and the chance to get glimpses of whales – elements that are sure to make your island-hopping-by-bike experience truly unique. Our San Juan Islands Bike Tour is one of a kind.

Itinerary

Day 1: "Friday on a Sunday" (38 miles - 2,500 vertical feet) To start our San Juan Islands bike tour we'll depart from Anacortes by ferry to begin our week of island hopping and bike touring. We'll board the ferry and head to San Juan Island proper. Arriving at Friday Harbor, we'll saddle up and explore the north side of the island from atop two wheels. With stops at Roche Harbor, the storied English Camp, and Smallpox Bay, if we're lucky we'll encounter a pod or two of whales off the Island's western shores. If a distillery or winery visit sounds enticing, then feel free to stop off along the route to sample the artisanal libations being crafted on San Juan. Returning to Friday Harbor, wander the walkable town by foot and get settled in to our accommodations for the next three nights before we reconvene for dinner. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 2: Slow-pez Island Time (42 miles - 2,200 vertical feet) Today we'll start with a ferry ride to the quaint Lopez Island, which offers up some of the easiest cycling routes within the archipelago. Upon arrival, we'll hop on bikes to explore virtually every nook and cranny that Lopez has to offer. Taking in the abundance of wildlife and ocean views we'll make our way to Lopez Village, nestled alongside Fisherman Bay, where you can stroll the variety of shops, cafes, and galleries. Later we'll take another ferry ride back "home" to Friday Harbor. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 3: Spinning around the South Side (40 miles - 2,300 vertical feet) Our travels today will encompass the southern half of San Juan Island as we cycle past alpaca ranches, valleys dotted with cows and sheep (baaaa!), and an active lavender farm. Enjoy the culinary creations of a generous picnic spread prepared by your trusty guide at Lime Kiln Point State Park while taking in views of the finest shoreline on the island. Take a hike beneath towering madrone trees and along rock formations to the lighthouse, which is situated at one of the best spots in the world for shore-based whale watching. After pedaling back to Friday Harbor, unwind as you see fit and enjoy dinner tonight on your own at a restaurant of your choice. Meals included: Breakfast & Lunch‍‍

Day 4: Orcas: The Whales & The Island Optional ride(s) (Up to 30 miles - 1,600 vertical feet) After checking out of our accommodations on San Juan today, we will set out on the water again, but this time on a small boat whale-watching cruise – our chance to get up close to some whales. A short boat ride in the afternoon will deliver us to the village of Orcas on the island by the same name, where we can take an easy, short spin to the hamlet of Eastsound on the northern banks. Rest those legs this evening as we'll need them to conquer the terrain that this Gem of the San Juans offers up. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 5: Mount Constitution‍‍‍ (40 miles - 5,200 vertical feet) Have a hearty breakfast to provide the necessary nutrients to propel yourself to the summit of Mount Constitution on today's mini-epic. We'll explore the east side of Orcas Island and see for ourselves how it garnered the nickname 'Emerald Isle'. After a stop at Doe Bay to refuel, we'll ascend the 2,400' peak and take in panoramic views of the surrounding islands, the Cascade Mountains, and many Canadian and American cities. A fun descent will bring us back into Eastsound Village, where we can relax before gathering for another meal together, and the close to another fantastic day on our San Juan Islands bike tour. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 6: Sampling Shaw Island‍ (49 miles - 4,000 vertical feet) It may be our last full day of the tour, but that doesn't mean it's light on activity. We'll venture out to peaceful Shaw Island for a half-day of exploration by bike. Upon return to Orcas Village, have a stroll around and enjoy lunch before exploring the West Sound en route back to Eastsound Village. Tonight we reconvene for a farewell dinner and share the highlights and memories made along the road on this incredible Black Sheep Adventure. ‍‍ Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 7: Farewell! Optional Ride (9 miles - 700 vertical feet) We pack up this morning and make our way via van or bike to the ferry terminal in Orcas Village. A final ferry ride will return us to Anacortes, where you can continue your vacation as you see fit. Meals included: Breakfast

Seine River

This week-long bike and barge cruise takes you along the Seine River Valley, passing by splendid estates including the castle and grounds at Fontainebleau, and through small medieval towns on the way to Montargis. Enjoy this scenic ride on easy canal paths, with frequent stops to sip café au lait in quaint French villages. Our boat for the week floats quietly along the Seine River, slipping through locks and under bridges while sumptuous meals are prepared onboard. This tour is ideal for anyone who loves the French joie de vivre, and those who are new to cycling and want to try bicycle traveling without having to pack and unpack their bags.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Paris, the city of lights Meet early afternoon at our docking point in central Paris. We'll take a test ride with the bikes this afternoon and you'll have time to explore the surroundings before we gather to meet everybody including the barge crew. We'll enjoy a welcome drink and dinner on board tonight. And how about a post-dinner stroll in central Paris? Meals included: Dinner

Day 2 - Exiting Paris by boat and bike (28 miles, 400 feet gain) Avoid the city traffic by cruising through Paris on our private barge, enjoying views from the river and relaxing on board. Breakfast and a leisurely morning onboard prepare us for late-morning departure along the Seine river and through the Sénart Forest. Meander along bike paths and through sleepy villages to reach the small town of Melun where our boat will dock for the night on the ancient village island. Melun, born as a Gallic town was then a Roman mutatio. Those wanting more time on the bike can pedal an additional 25 km to visit two castles, the Vaux-le-Vicomte and Blandy medieval castle/village. We'll taste another specialty of town, the Brie de Melun. There is the option of bicycling an extra 25 km (15 miles). If you'd like to partake in the extra rides on this trip you will need to navigate using the Ride with GPS tracks that we will make available to you 30 days prior to your departure date. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3 - Pedaling through Fontainebleau (28 miles, 800 feet gain) Start your delightful ride along the river lined by sumptuous villas. Enjoy the quiet bike path before we leave the river to dive into the expansive Fontainebleau forest, centered around the famous Fontainebleau castle which was home to French monarchs for about eight centuries. Our first stop is the small village of Barbizon, formerly home to mid-19th century painters including Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet. Continue through the forest to reach the magnificent Fontainebleau castle, one of France's most spectacular royal palaces. We'll enjoy a guided visit of the castle as well as a picnic on the royal grounds. Continue pedaling to return to our boat, moored tonight in a medieval fortified town along a small tributary of the Seine River. Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4 - From Moret-sur-Loing to Nemours (28 miles, 1,100 feet gain) Spend some time this morning wandering the streets of quaint Moret-Sur-Loing, the fortified medieval town that inspired Impressionist painters including Monet and British artist Alfred Sisley. Our ride today takes us along the Loing River to another artist village. From here, you can choose to take a longer ride or continue along the river to reach our boat, docked in tiny medieval Nemours. Visit town and its medieval castle or, for a different take on the region's (pre)history, enjoy a visit to the interesting prehistorical museum, which houses rich archaeological collections from the Paleolithic period through the end of the Iron Age, excavated in the Île-de-France region. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5 - Medieval Castles and Towns (22 miles, 500 feet gain) The Loing River was "improved" in the early 18th Century in an effort to increase visits from merchants. We'll leapfrog the canal today as we pedal through forested areas and rural countryside to reach a private castle open to us for a visit and lunch. After lunch, we'll keep pedaling to the impressive fortified medieval town of Chateau Landon. An engaging guided walk through town brings to life the importance of this town—. A quick downhill brings us to our boat, docked on the Loing Canal in a tranquil spot for the night. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6 - Montargis (26 miles, 800 feet gain) An optional 13 km ride this morning takes you to a unique art spot in a nearby town. This garden museum honors influential and prolific 19th Century sculptor Antoine Bourdelle by hosting 58 of his bronze statues in a lovely garden. Keep pedaling to the small medieval town of Ferrières with its impressive Benedictine Abbey, tiny alleyways and historic wash houses. Take a break and wander through town before continuing south to arrive in Montargis, the second largest town of the region and a fitting ending destination to our barge trip as its medieval center is crisscrossed with canals and rivers. Our home for the next two nights! Enjoy dinner in town tonight. Meals included: Breakfast & Lunch

Day 7 - Loop ride in Montargis (31 miles, 1,000 feet gain) A loop ride today takes us to another small town in the countryside to visit a unique, thriving honey making farm and "living museum" where a short visit highlights the peculiar place of bees in the world. Brittany & Normandy

France's northwest coast-with its rocky cliffs and sandy beaches-is widely known for its pivotal role in WWII, but the region's strong cultural identity and historic significance dates back to ancient Celtic roots. Just a couple hundred miles south of English Westcountry, Brittany and Normandy are geographically similar-though warmer, sunnier and less populated-compared with coastal England, and share a history of war, commerce, migration and cultural exchange that predates the Roman Empire.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Saint-Malo As you approach the walled city of Saint-Malo, pause to appreciate its tactical position near the mouth of the English Channel, its sheer, fortified walls, and its vast tidal beaches. Saint-Malo is notorious for its independent streak, having harbored corsairs-French privateers and pirates-who acquired fortunes from passing ships. Tonight enjoy a walk of the ramparts, and the opportunity to explore the old town's citadel and cobbled streets before enjoying a sumptuous welcome dinner. Bike Fitting and Test Ride this afternoon. Meals included: Dinner

Day 2 - Loop ride to Cancale (30 miles, 1,200 feet gain) Inland Brittany is a secret world of winding paths, walled villages, granite cottages and serene churches. Our first stop will be the Ferme marine where we will learn all about oyster farming. Pedal leisurely through this storybook countryside, or crank up your cadence to spend more time exploring the colorful port town of Cancale and its many culinary delights from the sea. Treat yourself to a lunch of oysters, langoustines, crabs, or clams as you watch the sailboats. Or perhaps you'll head north to Pointe du Grouin, which marks the entrance into the Bay of Mont Saint Michel, before turning back toward Saint-Malo along rocky coastline and sandy beaches. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 - Bicycle to Sables d'Or les Pins (38 miles, 1,900 feet gain) Just when you thought Brittany's shoreline couldn't get more picturesque, you arrive at the breathtaking blue-green waters of the Côte d' Eméraude west of Saint-Malo. Here you'll ferry across the broad estuary of the Rance River to the charming resort town of Dinard, where generations of wealthy British vacationers have built magnificent villas. The ocean breeze is fresh and strong as you ride Cap Fréhel's soaring cliffs to the 14th-century Fort la Latte castle stronghold. This iconic fortress-complete with drawbridge, dungeons, turrets and sheer drop to the breaking waves-is fully restored and has been used in films including The Vikings (1958) starring Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis. Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 4 - Bicycle to Dinan (37 miles, 2,000 feet gain) With the coast at your back, today's ride guides you south through Brittany's patchwork of farms, forests and rivers-home to the region's rich cultural heritage that tourists seldom experience. At the edge of La Hunaudaye Forest, you'll cross an impressive moat to explore the worn walls and secret corners of 13th-century Château de la Hunaudaye, a key example of Medieval architecture. Turning east toward Corseul, the ancient capital of the Gallo-Roman province of the Coriosolites, your mind may turn to locating the perfect lunch spot, but be sure to visit Corseul's archaeological museum and ancient ruins before continuing on to Dinan, one of Brittany's best-preserved Medieval towns. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 5 - Loop ride around the Rance Estuary (34 miles, 1,900 feet gain) We'll have a guided tour of Dinan and explore its half-timbered homes, cobbled streets, ramparts and an attractive port on the Rance River, Dinan beckons visitors to shop its local craft boutiques, art galleries, workshops and cafés. You may wish to set out on foot, boat up the Rance Valley, or mount your bike and take a loop ride north along the Rance River estuary to Saint-Suliac and back. Riding from village to village, you'll see fishermen at work, and children at play. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 - Bicycle to le Mont Saint-Michel (43 miles, 1,200 feet gain) The ride to Mont Saint-Michel awaits, but there's a lot to see and do before reaching the kilometer-long bridge to the island tomorrow. On the way to Normandy, stop for lunch in Dol de Bretagne and explore its Abbey, formerly the seat of one of nine ancient bishoprics of Brittany. Later in the day, notice the abrupt hill rising from the flat countryside surrounding the village of Mont-Dol-a geological twin to Saint-Michel to further whet your appetite. Finally, chalk arrows point your route along the edge of the bay, and your first views of the world-famous island abbey can be seen! The site was first chosen as a stronghold during the 6th century for its proximity to the mainland, its low-tide accessibility, and natural defensive features during high tide. It has been a monastery since the 8th century and is the subject of a 164 million euro project to remove accumulated silt and restore it to an island. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 7 - Guided visit Mont Saint-Michel This morning you'll have a guided visit of Mont Saint-Michel and its abbey. A fabulous way to end your journey across Brittany and into Normandy. Meals included: Breakfast

Best of Provence

Explore the best Provence has to offer. Culinary highlights include a splendid Mediterranean feast of Côtes-de-Rhône wines, exquisite olive oil from a local olive press and more Roman ruins than you will find even in Italy. France's small country roads will lead through the secrets behind the local artisans savoir-faire. And we'll give you the chance to taste it all from special visits and markets right up to special dinner at a local chef's home. You'll also visit the places where Van Gogh and Cézanne painted a majority of their most well-known paintings. This trip gives you a superb view of both medieval and Roman masterpieces such as the theater and arena in Arles, the impressive Pont du Gard, the ancient Roman town of Aix-en-Provence and the medieval jewel of Uzès. A great bike tour for friends or couples where one partner likes to ride more than the other.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Arles Meet today at our hotel in Arles on the banks of the Rhône River. The Romans bridged the Rhône here during the 1st Century B.C., and today the city has a well-preserved Roman theater and arena. The latter is still used for Provençal bullfights. This evening, we'll enjoy a special introductory meal together in a local chef's home. Meals included: Dinner

Day 2 - Bicycle to St Rémy (20 miles, 700 feet gain) This morning Arles puts on one of the largest outdoor markets in France. You'll have plenty of time to check it all out before taking a short but scenic ride to St Rémy. This afternoon you can start visiting St Rémy or take an optional loop ride that goes through quaint medieval Provençal towns including Maillane, home to writer Frédéric Mistral, a proponent of Provençal culture and winner of the 1904 Nobel Prize for Literature. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 3 - Bicycle to Les Baux-de-Provence (31 miles, 1,800 feet gain) St. Rémy is where Van Gogh painted several of his most famous works during a year's residence in the local sanitarium. You'll appreciate the views that inspired him as we support a ride to Les-Baux-de-Provence and into the Alpilles hills. There is much to explore in St Rémy this afternoon including the Roman ruins of Glanum, Van Gogh's sanitarium and the great shopping in town. Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 4 - Bicycle to St. Quentin la Poterie (40 miles, 1,600 feet gain) We'll start the day with an olive oil tasting at a local olive press located just a few kilometers outside St Rémy. On our ride today we will cross the Rhône at Tarascon where you can visit the perfectly preserved 15th-century castle. Our route will then continue north to the Pont du Gard which is arguably the most extraordinary Roman ruin in all of Europe. It dates to 20 B.C. when it was built to support the aqueduct that carried water from Uzès to the Roman town of Nîmes. Later this afternoon we'll arrive in St Quentin la Poterie a small town with a long tradition of pottery making going back to prehistoric times. The craftsmen of St. Quentin contributed their pottery making skills to decorate the Palais des Papes in Avignon in the 14th Century. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 5 - Rest day in St. Quentin la Poterie (26 miles, 1,700 feet gain) Optional bike ride to Uzes and local vineyards. We'll be in St Quentin again tonight, so you can decide whether you want to ride today, relax by the pool, or enjoy exploring the winding streets of St Quentin. We will also offer a shuttle into medieval Uzès for those who wish. If you chose to get out on your bike, we'll take a loop ride south to Uzès and ride through rolling vineyard country. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 - Bicycle to Séguret (45 miles, 2,500 feet gain) Today we head into the heart of the Côtes du Rhone vineyards with some of the most prestigious wines in the south of France including the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape. We'll have a beautiful ride through small villages and open countryside before arriving at Châteauneuf where you can get a cafe lunch on your own, or picnic at the castle, a former summer palace of the Avignon Popes, followed by an optional wine tasting of your choice at any of the countless local wineries. Our route continues on to Séguret surrounded by vineyards and set against the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail mountains- our little paradise for the next two nights. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 7 - Vaison-la-Romaine and Côtes-du-Rhône vineyards (33 miles, 2,800 feet gain) You can take a day off the bikes and relax at the hotel or pedal our loop ride to Vaison-la-Romaine and the nearby quaint villages known for their wines. Vaison offers some great insight into Roman and medieval life and architecture with its Roman ruins, archaeological museum, and imposing castle. The rest of the loop continues through wine country and Provençal villages with the giant Mont Ventoux set in the background. For those who want to push their limits there is also the opportunity to ride up to 100 km (62 miles) and ascend Mont Ventoux, the most illustrious Tour de France climb! You also have the option to take on Mont Ventoux (49 km) and forgo the loop ride. Regardless of what you decide it's guaranteed to be an amazing day! Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Puglia’s Villages

Beautifully situated on the Adriatic Coast between the spur and heel of Italy's "boot" lies Puglia. Nestle against the brilliant blue of the Mediterranean ancient Greek and Italian cultures mingle among hillside vineyards, olive groves, and whitewashed villages. Join us as we begin our bicycling journey in Matera, a world renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site, where dwellings carved into limestone caves create an enchanted and ancient stone city. We'll pedal east toward Alberobello, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, through a landscape filled with unique conical shaped dwellings known as trulli. Finish in the striking "Città Bianca" or "White City" of Ostuni. Along the way you'll enjoy meals prepared with Italian, Greek, and Middle Eastern influences and discover the warmth and hospitality of Southern Italy's friendliest people.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Matera Arrive in Matera, unique in all of Italy for the cave dwellings that ring the central city. Inhabited by refugee clerics and monks from Greece and the Balkans during the 8th and 9th centuries, the cave churches and domestic dwellings carved into the town's calcarenite or semi-sandstone cliffs at one time housed as many as 25,000 people. Today, the churches and caves are preserved as a World Heritage Site as being the "most outstanding, intact example of a cave-dwelling settlement in the Mediterranean." Settle into our hotel, carved out of limestone rock thousands of years ago, and enjoy our welcome dinner after fitting bikes. Meals included: Dinner

Day 2 - Matera (21 miles, 1,600 feet gain) We'll start the morning with a fascinating guided walk through town, including a visit to an enormous man-made water cistern dug under the town. Though the cistern is obsolete, it is a fascinating view into ancient workmanship. After our walk, we'll hop on the bikes and ride to a rural working farm restaurant for a refreshing (and yummy!) lunch. From here, you can choose whether to head back to Matera, or do a loop ride up to nearby Montescaglioso, a small hill town that was home to one of the oldest and richest Benedictine communities. Meals included: Breakfast & Lunch

Day 3 - Locorotondo (32 miles, 1,400 feet gain) Our ride today starts with a shuttle and features olive groves and vineyards as we head toward the "Valle d'Itria" which is the heart of Puglia's trulli region. Trulli are conical shaped rural dwellings unique to this part of Italy. Originally used as storage sheds for farmers, they quickly became popular as temporary shelters. We'll arrive near the small but vibrant town of Locorotondo where we'll sample fresh mozzarella, burrata and straciatella and learn more about how they are produced. Settle into our hotel and enjoy dinner together tonight. Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 4 - Loop ride to Alberobello (38 miles, 1,800 feet gain) We'll pedal to the iconic "trulli" town of Alberobello where we'll have a guided tour to learn more about these conical shaped buildings and the people who built them. Take time to explore this unique town and have lunch on your own before getting back on the bike and heading back to Locorotondo. This afternoon get lost in the whitewashed maze of lanes and historic buildings towering over them. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 5 - Bicycle to Ostuni (31 miles, 1,600 feet gain) Our ride today will take you first through vineyards and olive groves to the whitewashed town of Ostuni. Our hotel is located in the center of this amazing village which spans three hilltops and is crowned by a Gothic cathedral. Destroyed by Hannibal during the Punic Wars in 1st and 2nd Centuries BC, Ostuni was rebuilt by the Greeks and takes its name from them as "Astu néon or "new town". Rebuilt by the Normans in the 10th Century, Ostuni then flourished during the Italian Renaissance under Duchess Isabella of Bari. This is an imposing and beautiful city from afar and within. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 - Loop ride through the Valle d'Itria (28 miles, 1,400 feet gain) We'll take a loop ride from our hotel today through the Valle d'Itria. The first stop will be to visit an underground olive press dating to pre-Roman times and used until the 19th C. Our ride continues on the Via Appia Traiana just before reaching the Adriatic Coast. Built by order of the Roman Emperor Traiano in the 2nd century A.D., the Via Traiana connected Rome to Brindisi, one of the most important ports for commerce with the Middle East. We'll parallel the coast today with a possible dip at a local beach before continuing to the medieval town of Carovigno and back to our hotel. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 7 - Farewell Whether you are headed to Brindisi, Bari or Rome we hope you enjoy your travel or trip home. Thanks for joining us in Puglia. Meals included: Breakfast

Tuscany

This bicycle experience merges refined lodging and cycling through unique parts of Southern Tuscany. This is a focused exploration of two locations in the Maremma region of Tuscany, squeezed between the Tyrhennian Sea and the volcanic lake region north of Rome. For three nights you'll enjoy a countryside resort which is a springboard for great days of cycling to the sea, where fishing villages and beaches bring the coast to life. Retreat to the resort's olive grove and spend the afternoon lounging near the pool, or enjoy optional activities such as art classes, cooking classes, in-depth culinary activities, or get back in the saddle and go mountain biking or horse back riding! Your next resort is in the beautiful, small village of Sovana, where you'll enjoy a unique and magnificent landscape as you pedal to small Tufa towns, built with and into the soft tufa (volcanic stone) prevalent in this area. Here too, enjoy the immense hotel grounds with its natural swimming pool and sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. This is a relaxing bicycle holiday that provides great cycling, exceptional lodging and time on your own to simply relax or do a myriad of other activities.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Meet at Rome's Fiumicino airport to shuttle to Maremma We will start the day with a shuttle from Rome's Fiumicino airport to our country resort in the Tuscany region of Maremma. We will enjoy lunch together before our bike fitting and first loop ride. On the test ride we recommend you visit the Tarot Garden, an esoteric sculpture garden based on Tarot cards, designed by the French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle. This garden is home to one of the most amazing outdoor sculpture gardens in the world. Opened in 1998, it is something between an Antonio Gaudí or Salvatore Dali exhibit and a Cristo installation. Once back at the hotel, you can lounge by the pool or ride a few extra miles to explore the small hilltop village of Capalbio. Enjoy getting lost in the intricate alley ways of this picture perfect village or visit the tiny castle with its magnificent view of the surrounding landscape. Though you won't be lost for long, you will gain an understanding for the defensive strategy of building villages that are reminiscent of a maze. Meals included: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2 - Coastal loop ride (23 miles, 600 feet gain) We cycle towards the coast today, riding parallel to it as we reach Monte Argentario, a small mountain emerging from the sea and connected to the mainland by two sand bars which form a lagoon. Here you'll find Orbetello - a once thriving fishing village, in the middle of the lagoon. Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano are the two main villages of Monte Argentario and were once important open water ports, the huge defensive fortresses you see today were built by the Spanish. Cycle up to the main fort for a majestic view over Porto Ercole and the coast, take the opportunity to enjoy a snack or beverage as you overlook the bay. Return by shuttle or bicycle back to the hotel (an additional 46 km and 521 meters of climbing). Be sure to consider that there are a wide variety of optional afternoon activities including cooking demonstrations, winery or olive oil visits or just relaxing by the pool. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 3 - Ride to Talamone (31 miles, 1,700 feet gain) We'll pedal north toward Magliano this morning before turning towards the Tyrrenian coast to reach the small village of Talamone. Perched high on a rocky promontory overlooking a picturesque gulf, this tiny village gets its name from Greek legends. Once upon a time this was an important Etruscan port, today it is a sleepy fishing village with an imposing fortress overseeing the village and its beaches. Enjoy some time here before shuttling or cycling back to the hotel (47 km and 390 meters of climbing) where you can enjoy an optional visit to an herbal liqueur maker in town or a yoga class at the hotel. Or, how about a horseback ride? You have a few options for dinner tonight - opt for the hotel restaurant or enjoy a unique barbecue dinner on the grounds. Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 4 - Capalbio to Sovana (36 miles, 3,200 feet gain) Today's ride is rewarding and a little more challenging as you make your way to Sovana. This beautifully situated Etruscan town is literally carved into the local tufa (volcanic stone). Along the way, take the opportunity to stop and visit a local dairy and discover the secrets of Tuscan Pecorino cheese from the cheese maker himself. This afternoon, take part in an optional guided visit of the monumental Etruscan Hildebrand tomb, one of the most famous and well-preserved tombs of the area where you'll wander through canyon-like alleyways sculpted from stone! Settle into the hotel for the evening or head to the center of town to sit and enjoy a drink, surrounded by remarkable tufa stone buildings. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5 - Loop ride to Sorano and Pitigliano (20 miles, 1,800 feet gain) Today's loop ride takes us to the striking towns of Sorano and Pitigliano, both of which are perched high on cliffs of tufa stone. Similar to Sovana, these towns have Etruscan origins and impressive archaeological remnants. Built between the 10th and 15th centuries, they were held by important Roman families, the Aldobrandeschi (Sorano) and the Orsini (Pitigliano) until their fall to the Medici, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Their elaborate palaces still stand in the center of both towns. For those who can't stand the idea of ending their ride in Tuscany there is the option to add another 26 km and 571 meters. Once back at the hotel, enjoy a swim in the pool, a pasta making demonstration, or further exploration of the surrounding archaeological sites. Tonight we'll toast our adventure and savor a celebratory dinner together. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 6 - Shuttle to Orvieto train station Say goodbye after breakfast. We'll shuttle you to the Orvieto train station where you can catch trains north to Florence or south to Rome. If you have the time, we highly recommend you spend a few days in Orvieto to enjoy this spectacular town. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 1 - Tour Begins on Lake Maggiore North of Milan Meet this afternoon in Verbania, on the shores of Lake Maggiore, perhaps the most celebrated lake in Italy's lake district. Surrounded by 7,000 foot alpine peaks Lake Maggiore enjoys a warm micro-climate that has attracted vacationers since the Milanese aristocracy began building villas here in the 17th century. Come early and visit the Borromean Islands, including Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori (of the "fishermen"), the villas of Stresa, and the botanic gardens of Pallanza. We fit bicycles this afternoon and will suggest a warm up ride for you on a bike path along the lake. Welcome dinner together. Meals included: Dinner

Day 2 - Ferry to Laveno, Bicycle to Lugano (36 miles, 2,900 feet gain) Enjoy the views across Lake Maggiore and into the high Alps as we ferry across Lake Maggiore to Laveno, the only natural harbor on the east side of the lake. From here you'll pedal into the Cuvia Valley and over a small pass into Val Ganna where we join a rails to trails bike path to Ponte Tresa, where we will cross the border into Switzerland. Your ride continues along Lake Lugano for more great views on the Swiss Alps before arriving in the bustling city of Lugano, your destination for today. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 3 - Rest Day on the shores of Lake Lugano (15 miles, 1,800 feet gain) This morning you have plenty of options: take a little more time to explore this vibrant city's shopping and museum opportunities; or take the funicular to the top of Monte Bre' for a spectacular view over the lake. For those who want to ride there is the chance to go for a ride along the shores and hills of Lake Lugano your climbing efforts will be rewarded with great views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 4 - Bicycle Lugano to Menaggio Lake Como (32 miles, 3,200 feet gain) Unlike Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano, which are shared between Italy and Switzerland, Lake Como is strictly Italian. Lake Como (also called Lario) is one of the most beautiful of the Italian lakes. It is famous for its villas, including Villa d'Este in Cernobbio and Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo. We'll spend the next two nights on the shores of Lake Como. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 5 - Menaggio on Lake Como (23 miles, 3,100 feet gain) There are plenty of opportunities to explore today: Visit the lakeside gardens of Villas Melzi and Serbelloni; ferry to Varenna and visit the gardens of Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero. If you are looking for a cycling challenge you can pedal to the internationally known Madonna del Ghisallo chapel and bicycle museum at the top of the pass near Magréglio, not far from Bellagio. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 - Ride to Como (29 miles, 2,600 feet gain) Our ride today takes us along the Lecco arm of Lake Como and up a short climb to Asso. From here we head downhill on a bike path closed to automobile traffic. Our destination is the town of Como at the southern-most end of Lake Como. Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 7 - Tour ends in Como Stick around and explore this lovely city or head to Venice or Milan both well-connected by train. Whatever you do enjoy! Meals included: Breakfast
